Techtalk: When Should You Buy a New Laptop?

ww

We’ve all somehow been through a situation wherein we finally decide to replace our old and worn out gadgets such as cellphones and laptops with something shiny, new and as promised by the labels, more “advanced”.   But then a few months or worse, a few weeks from buying it, another model comes out, more advanced, and to your utter surprise, its on a promo price.

After the surprise, then comes a churning in your stomach with the words “why didn’t I wait for that model to come out?” ringing through your ears.  If its hard swallowing the fact that you haven’t bought the best upgrade at all, its harder to swallow the credit card bill that comes along.

So for those who haven’t tried making this mistake, or for those who have, but need to be reminded still, here are some tips we found to prevent another disastrous buy:

First of all, we all need to be reminded that manufacturers of technology nowadays are in a constant race against rivals and themselves in advancing their technology, so, while gadgets advance constantly, only little features are actually added.  However, some brands put much effort into their research and development that when they actually release a new model for the same type of gadget, a brand new feature that isn’t found elsewhere is usually the result.   Because the development of the gadget took so long, and because it’s perfect as it is, its value doesn’t depreciate right away.  So, when you window-shop for the replacement of your gadget, opt for brands that release models that take a year or two before its price depreciates.  If you have trouble finding this type of model, you can ask the help of the sales representatives.

This next thing to think about can actually be thought of first, but whichever you choose to contemplate on ahead, brings about the same result. Here it is, before looking for the right brand for you, or while looking through gadget stores, think about whether you really need to change your gadget already.  For this article, we focus on laptops.  In the ever-changing world of laptops, do you really need to upgrade yours? In determining the answer to this, consider this text from an online source called www.pcworld.com.  It sums up everything:

“Consider what you do with your current laptop, and what you’d like to do. If your current model still works properly, runs all the apps you want to run well enough, and accesses all the services you want without problems, you might as well stick with it. The right time to get a new system is when you notice your needs have changed and your current laptop no longer meets those needs. Maybe you bought a heavier laptop because you rarely travel, but find yourself in a new job or position that requires lots of travel. Now, your laptop’s weight and limited battery life are a constant source of frustration. Perhaps the games you played two years ago ran fine on your laptop, but modern games don’t, and gaming is a big part of your laptop use. Maybe web services have evolved beyond your laptop’s capabilities, and hi-def YouTube clips (for instance) stutter and chop, forcing you to view the lower-resolution version.

Obviously, if your laptop no longer works properly, is beyond warranty, and it will cost more to repair than it’s really worth, you’re better off buying something new. If that’s the case, or if you find your needs have outgrown your current laptop, it’s time to start shopping.”

Last but not least on our list of generally important tips, is timing.   Yes, buying a laptop requires precise timing. especially when you are eyeing Apple products.  To do this, you just have to regularly browse the internet for credible sources on when a new release will be sold to the market so that you can get the best out of your money.  Looking for the most appropriate models from other laptop brands are usually tricky since they have no permanent schedule, but searching the web especially on forums is very helpful. Not considering the time for buying the laptop you want could cost you an excellent feature in its OS that could have been helpful to your future usage.

So, what’s it gonna be then? Will you be buying a new laptop any sooner or not?
